Mak Breeding BV is actively breeding many types of lilies. With a well motivated breeding team every year thousands of combinations are made. The crossings are partly being done in the traditional way, at which seed is developed and from this seed new varieties are being formed. The bulbs (or seedlings) are all unique, every specimen out of millions has its own specific properties.

Increasingly descendants are being obtained by various artificial methods. A few examples of this are the use of the cut-style method in the crossing process and the saving of embryo’s out of not fully grown seeds after pollination. More lab techniques are being used to develop totally new lilies, especially between different lily groups. All this makes the breeding of lilies a costly project.

That is why the target is to create new, better lilies that have a surplus value for all users in the chain. For Mak Breeding this already starts with a healthy and strong growth of bulbs. Besides that the forcing qualities have to be good and stable, flower richness, sturdy ness, colour strength and winter quality are important properties. A lily is an ornamental product, and the larger the ornamental value the more favourite a variety in potential is. Also important in the breeding process are the keeping qualities of the bunch of lilies. Extensive testing work is being done on this also.
To summarize Mak Breeding BV is working toward strong useable lilies with high ornamental value. This is the groups Orientals, Asiatics, Longiforums, pot lilies, LA’s, OT’s and other variety crossings
